President's Message - October 2007

I’d like to use my first President’s Message to update you on the current status of the chapter and tell you about the exciting projects that the Uniformed Services Chapter of AAEM (USAAEM) is working on for our members.

At the time of this writing, we have 112 members, making us one of the largest AAEM chapters after slightly more than 1 year of existence. Our budget is firmly in the black and we look forward to developing new member benefits while responsibly managing the money that our members invest in us.

But enough of that…on to the things we are doing for you!

After a successful preconference at the 2007 AAEM Scientific Assembly, we are again preparing one for 2008. Instead of a half-day preconference, this year we will present a full day of military directed CME. LTCOL Ben Harrison, the Past-President of USAAEM, is in charge of these efforts and is creating an exciting day of up-to-date education on combat focused ultrasound, trauma care, procedural sedation, etc. While the exact topics and speakers are not finalized, I ensure you it will be an event not to be missed. Clear your calendars now!

Last year we also held a social event at the Scientific Assembly that was very well attended. We are planning another event where we can meet and greet each other with your food and beverage of choice in hand.

We are in the process of creating a quarterly newsletter for USAAEM members. It will be delivered via e-mail and will contain articles pertinent to the military EP, President’s Messages, and message from the various military leaders in EM. Look for this new benefit in an inbox near you.

We have recently created a new position on the Board of Directors, a Medical Student Representative. This person will work to further the interests of military medical students and hopefully develop a youthful devotion to USAAEM that will serve as the future building blocks for and leadership of our chapter.

Anyone interested in USAAEM membership, helping with one of these projects, or with any new ideas for USAAEM ideas is encourage to contact AAEM at info@aaem.org or me directly at jschofer@gmail.com. Thank you for your continued support as we build the chapter.
